Cost Savings

San Francisco requires SF City staff to buy 100% postconsumer recycled (PCR) white copy paper to support the recycling industry. These products sometimes cost slightly more than the more common 30% PCR papers. However, by specifying a lower "brightness" index (85 bright instead of 92 bright), the City saved 15%.

Why Go Green

Unlike elemental chlorine-free (ECF) paper, paper that is processed chlorine-free (PCF) does not use chlorine bleach which can release cancer-causing chemicals into wastewater.

Criteria for Paper: White, Copy

Standard letter- and legal-sized office papers must have 100% postconsumer waste (PCW) recycled content and be processed chlorine-free.
