Cost Savings

San Francisco requires SF City staff to buy 100% postconsumer recycled (PCR) white copy paper to support the recycling industry. These products sometimes cost slightly more than the more common 30% PCR papers. However, by specifying a lower "brightness" index (85 bright instead of 92 bright), the City saved 15%.

Tips

If you can, buy processed chlorine-free (PCF) paper. Unlike elemental chlorine-free (ECF) paper, paper that is PCF does not use chlorine bleach which can release cancer-causing chemicals into wastewater.

Criteria for Paper: White Copy

White copy paper (i.e., 20 pound cut sheet) in the following sizes must have 100% PCW recycled content: letter size (8 ½” X 11”), legal size (8 ½” X 14”) and ledger (11” X 17”).
